Silent Reading Book Talk

Reminder that each student is to complete a Book Talk. Students will discuss a book they have chosen to read during silent reading time.

Written copy and presentation due March 9th.

Grade 8 Writing Portfolio

Project details


The grade 8 portfolio must include:
A. Table of contents- a list of items in the portfolio
B. Personal statement- a letter written by the student introducing himself/herself and describing his/her education strengths, weaknesses and goals. 10 pts
C. Character Letter - a letter written by the student describing ways the student has demonstrated the core values of EPS (integrity/honesty, can-do attitude, personal responsibility, creative leadership and respect for diversity). Read to and signed by parent. 10 pts

D. Choose from the following project ideas. You must complete at least 125 points worth of work. All 125 points must be completed by Feb 23 rd.

You must provide an Outline(Graphic Organizer), Rough copy and Good copy of each project.

1. Journal Writing: Minimum of 6 sentences per entry 15 entries. Value 15pts

2. Reader Responses: Respond to books, films, music, and current events. Responses minimum of 250 words each. Value 10 pts

3. Poetry: create 3 original poems. Can be any of the following types: lyric, narrative, ballad, free verse, and social commentary, dramatic, humorous. Must be 1 page or 8 stanzas 4 lines per stanza. Value 15 pts

4. Short story: Create a short story. In any style, horror, fiction, science fiction, humorous, children's, historical fiction. Minimum of 500 words - Maximum 750. Value 20 pts.

5. Write a letter. Create a formal letter (1 pg) (Business format) to a teacher, author, sports figure, or politician. Value 5 pts

6. Descriptive Vignettes: Create your own fables/myths or legends must be 2 pages min. 10 pts.

7. Information pamphlet or how to guides (ex. Dog care) Value 10 pts.

8. Essay: Choose a topic and write a 500-word essay. Formal writing format. topic must be pre-approved. Value 20 pts.

9. Student’s choice: Create an assignment, which you are interested in completing. Mr. K must approve your assignment before starting. Depending on your assignment point value will vary. Value 5-20 pts.

10. Perform an interview of a trusted adult, teacher or coach. Create your own questions to ask and record the interview on paper. Interview questions (at least 15) must be approved prior to interview. Value 10 pts.

11. Write a short play. Choose a topic, minimum 4 characters, and 3-4 pages. Value 20 pts.


12. Perform an oral presentation. Choose a topic and create a presentation to deliver to the class. Topics suggestions must be approved by Mr. K prior to beginning work. Value 15 pts.

13. Personal review of a Movie, CD or Video Game. 15 pts. Give your opinion of the media you choose to review. You must include a description of the media, a ranking system to score the media. You must provide your own opinion do not plagiarize. –You can also choose to review a vehicle: bicycle, ATV, car or a device such as a TV, computer, mp3 player etc.

14. Create word games or puzzles. Puzzles must include answers and blank response sheets. You must use at least 20 different words. You cannot use a website to create your puzzle. 5 pts.
